NEET 2018 – Any Wrong Questions?

NEET 2018 has recently been conducted. Many coaching institutes such as Rao IIT Academy, Brilliant Study Centre, Allen Kota, Resonance, Careers Point and Akash Institute, every year release their answer key before the official answer key is declared. As they release the answer key, they also give the objections to some questions which they feel ambiguous.

NEET 2018: Wrong Questions, Doubtful Questions, How To Challenge

This year also, they have found errors in atleast 8-10 questions in different sections. The answers being given by the coaching institutes are different. Physics section leads the tally with 6 questions being doubted, followed by 4 in chemistry. Biology, the most important section, has 2 questions which are being doubted by the subject experts.

What Happens If There Is A Wrong Question In NEET 2018?

In past years, doubtful questions have been found in NEET paper which has been reported by the coaching institutes and been taken forward by the students as a challenge to the CBSE.

In NEET 2017, as reported by a leading newspaper, 3 questions of biology had confused a lot of students. The errors had been pointed out in the paper code W. The questions which were in the doubt were as following:

  • Q No 18- The question was ‘hepatic portal vein drains blood to the liver from which body part?’ Four options given were ‘heart, stomach, kidneys and intestine.’

Objection: Experts stated that in this question both options (2) stomach and (4) intestine are correct.

  • Q No 42- ‘The function of copper ions in copper-releasing IUDs?’ And the options given for this were a) they suppress sperm motility and fertilising capacity of sperms, b) they inhibit gametogenesis c) they make uterus unsuitable for implantation and d) they inhibit ovulation.

Objection: It was highlighted that in this question, both options (a) and (c) are the correct answers.

  • Q No 85- The question was, ‘In case of a couple where the male is having a very low sperm count, which technique will be suitable for fertilisation?’ Options were a) Intrauterine transfer, b) Gamete intracytoplasmic fallopian transfer, c) Artificial insemination and d) Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI).

Objection: In this question ‘very low sperm count’, which is a qualitative criterion, was mentioned. No numerical value to define the degree of oligospermia has been mentioned.

Some other questions which were in the line of fire were:

Biology

Question: Adult human RBCs are enucleated. Which of the following statements is/are the most appropriate explanation for this feature? a) They do not need to reproduce, b) They are somatic cells, c) They do not metabolize and d) All their internal space is available for oxygen transport

Options: i) Only d ii) Only iii) a,c, d iv) b and c

Answer as per CBSE: (iii) a,c,d

Experts say: Option (c) that says that they do not metabolise is incorrect. Even option (a) is also wrong and the correct answer is (i), which is only (d)

Chemistry

Question: Ionic mobility of which of the following alkali metals is lowest when the aqueous solution of their salts are put under electric field?

Options: i) Na ii) K iii) Rb iv) Li

Answer as per CBSE: (iii) Rb

Experts say: Lithium-ion, being the smallest, will be most hydrated in water. Therefore, the radius of the hydrated ion will be the largest, making it least mobile. Thus the correct answer option should have been (iv).

Also, CBSE had declared that their expert committee had also identified 2 physics question to be incorrect in many of the sets.

Students who have toiled hard for 2 years for the most important and awaited exam, must be anxious about this year also, whether similar things will happen this year also or not. They will have to wait for the official answer key which will be released by CBSE so that all the doubts are cleared and those who want to raise the objections to any questions can do so.

  1. For question number 47:
The correct answer is only about the estrogen receptors. As the other name of Saheli indicates, it is a NON-STEROIDAL pill. Hence there is no question of estrogen, a steroid in it. So the only correct answer is that, it blocks the estrogen receptors and prevents implantation.

  2. 54: Biology
Eutrophication is not at all because of UV-B radiation. Hence the correct answer is option 3

  3. i think the primary function of SAHELI is to prevents ovulation preventing ovulatiion is also function of it but i prefer 2nd one. all the best

  4. A common doubt many of us have is ,if a question has two correct options then whether the board will give marks for all or only for those who have attended the options ? Please reply with clear cut information.

    • Hi! Usually what happens is, if CBSE decides that any question is wrong in the question paper OR answers are ambiguous, then it gives bonus marks for all. Whether a candidate attempts a question or not, he/she gets bonus marks.

  5. Correct option is 3 only eutrophication is not because of uv b radiation and land fills is waste disposal

  6. Actually Saheli blocks estrogen receptor it is the function it doesn’t increase estrogen

And for the carboxylic acid question , expected answer would be H bonding and not the others because that’s kind of difference because it says comparable molecular mass

  7. 3 option is the correct ans as written in ncert eutrophication is nutrients enrichment and UV B effect on eye called snow blindness.

  8. One more question is wrong in Biology where it says plants absorb iron in which form ferrous ferric or both the answer should be both because plant absorb them in both forms

  9. In code PP, que no. 154 of biology:
Which of the following is not an autoimmune disease?
    (A) psoriasis
    (B) Rhematoid Arthritis
    (C) Alzheimer’s disease
    (D) Vitiligo

In above question the institutes is giving Alzheimer’s disease as an answer but it is also an autoimmune disease.
This question is out of NCERT textbook so the answer should be fact based. The new researches shows that AlzeiAlzhei disease is autoimmune disease.
So none of the options is setting as an answer to the question. So bonus marks should be given to every students for this answer.

    • unfortunately it came under discussion very lately and not yet completely proven … but mostly Alzheimer is a deficiency disease .. so no bonus marks

  10. One more question is wrong in Biology with says the lens is adjusted by which of the following smooth muscles and in other option it says the suspensory ligament the problem here is the ciliary muscles are the smooth muscles and both ciliary muscles and suspensory ligaments are responsible for adjusting the lens

  11. For an option in bio they gave me genetic engineering APPRAISAL committe instead of APPROVAL ..
    Will i get grace marks..

  12. In code PP, que no. 154 of biology:
Which of the following is not an autoimmune disease?
    (A) psoriasis
    (B) Rhematoid Arthritis
    (C) Alzheimer’s disease
    (D) Vitiligo
As already pointed by Mr. Samir even the standard Medicine books (Harrison’s text book) describe Alzheimer’s disease to be an autoimmune disease.

Regarding absorption of iron standard textbooks of botany describes that definitely iron is absorbed both in ferrous and ferric forms.

Another question is regarding the development of amnion you can refer any textbook of embryology in Anatomy. Cells in the roof of the amniotic cavity is derived from trophoblasts and Cells in the floor of the cavity is derived from ectoderm of the embryonic disc. None of the given answers are exactly correct.

But most of the coaching centers are giving the answer as ectoderm and mesoderm.(the reason for this is that the latest edition of Grey’s Anatomy describes that amnion is derived from epiblast and trophoblasts (trophoblast in turn is derived from extraembryonic mesoderm. They are taking epiblast to be same as ectoderm and extraembryonic mesoderm to be mesoderm. This shows the depth of knowledge about the question setters in cbse and even the coaching centers. Even if cbse is not accepting the challenge the two questions are 100% wrong.
Regarding Saheli it is given that it may be an estrogen receptor modulator but the exact mechanism of action is not given in any standard textbooks of obstetrics and gynecology..

I am not well versed in physics and chemistry, so only experts in these fields can clarify.
