NEET 2019 Changes May Roll Back; MHRD Considers NTA NEET 2019 Offline, Once A Year
In the latest turn of events news has arisen that NEET 2019 may be held once a year in offline mode. It is being considered by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) to neither conduct NTA NEET 2019 twice a year nor as computer based test. Whereas already the National Testing Agency has been formed and its official website shows the complete NEET 2019 schedule, the latest news as on 10 August 2018 is that health ministry is pressurizing MHRD to reconsider these changes.
What may change in NEET 2019?
As per latest news, both the changes initially announced for National Eligibility cum Entrance Test-UG (NEET-UG) 2019 are set to be rolled back. If this happens then the availability of NEET 2019 Application Form will also be affected.
Frequency of exam: The first thing to change would be to hold NEET 2019 once a year only.
Mode of exam: At least for the academic session 2019-2020, the exam could be in pen and paper based mode.
NEET 2019 Twice A Year In Online Mode: Concerns Highlighted By Health Ministry
A letter written by health ministry to MHRD, as per reports, points out issues with holding NEET 2019 twice a year as computer based test.
- To start with, candidates from rural background or economically poor sections will not like to go for computer based test.
- If NEET is in February, then class 12 students will have a continuous 4-5 months of exam as they will also have board exams. This will add to the pressure.
- As there will be 16 shifts in a year, NTA will need a huge question bank. This may become less novel / unique every year thus making it easy for coaching centres to exploit repeat pattern questions.
The NEET 2019 Timeline
Check out what has happened in the NEET 2019 timeline insofar.
07 Jul 2018: MHRD Minister Prakash Javadekar holds a press conference. In this, he announces that newly formed body NTA will hold NEET 2019. The exam will undergo two changes that are it will be held as computer based test and to happen twice.
On the same day, NTA website (nta.ac.in) is launched and schedule of NEET 2019 is released. As per it, the dates of NTA NEET 2019 exam are:
NEET (UG) in Feb 2019 and May 2019

|Declaration of results||First week of June 2019|
07 Jul 2018 to 09 Aug 2018: In the one month that followed the declaration of NTA NEET 2019, there was no major announcement.
10 Aug 2018: News reports start pouring in about MHRD reconsidering roll back of new rules of NEET 2019.
What Will Happen Next?
Will NEET 2019 will be held as a pen and paper based test? Will NEET 2019 be held once a year? If it is held once a year then will it be in February or May?
These are some of the major questions that need answers.
As per news reports, MHRD will take a call on these issues by next week. So final decision may come anytime between 13 to 20 August 2018.
Expected NEET 2019 Exam Date: Logically speaking, if exam takes place only once then it will be held in month of May. The February exam cannot be implemented as at that time students also sit for board exams. If exam was taking place twice then February and May exams still made sense for the sake of giving students two chances. However, it may happen that MHRD declares some other dates, a completely new schedule.
Final NEET 2019 Exam Date will probably be announced between 13 to 20 August 2018.
As per latest news about NEET 2019, there was a meeting between Health Ministry officials and officials from MHRD. The HRD ministry is reported to have agreed to maintain status quo only for NEET 2019.
Final decision will be made public by MHRD between 13 to 20 August 2018.
